Keep Your Ride Days Long With Lights

Cyclists must have lights after dusk and before dawn in every state. But beyond staying safe, lights let you ride longer as the days get shorter.

Bike lights are the essential accessory for every ride, day and night. All-weather headlights and tail lights provide visibility at night and help you stand out during daylight hours. Aside from keeping you safe, the right set of lights can help extend your ride time as the days get shorter.

Many riders know the benefits of early morning or late evening rides--quieter roads, an easier time managing busy daytime work and family schedules, and in traditionally warmer climates, cooler temps. Lights make getting out early to get that worm possible. Many lights, like those we stock from Bontrager not only help you be seen, but also light your way so you can see the road or trail ahead.

The proliferation of better batteries, bulbs, and mounts means today's compact lights are as good or better than many of the best lights on the market from years ago. Smaller and easier to manage, today's USB rechargeable lights are easy enough to use that many riders leave them on day and night and use the for every ride as a measure of safety.

If you're riding on the road in low light conditions, studies show riding with a flashing, daylight-visible light is the single best way for a cyclist to increase the likelihood of being seen by a driver. And there are specific daytime running lights for bikes. Brightness is important, but it takes more than a lot of lumens to make an effective DDRL. A true DRL is designed with specific focus, flash, and range to be seen from a meaningful distance during daylight hours. Without these three things, you just have a light, which is good, but not great.

Using a flashing tail light can make you up to 2.4 times more noticeable than a rider using no lights at all (and up to 1.4 times more noticeable than a rider using a light in steady mode). And research shows a 33% decrease in accidents for bicycles outfitted with DRLs. Studies have also shown that 8 out of 10 cycling accidents occur during daylight hours, when most people are riding and driving. DRLs are the single most effective product to help increase your noticeability during these peak hours.

Beyond that, these same lights work after dark, keeping you visible and letting you chart your route before work or after dinner.
