Top-tier athletes are known for the vast quantities of food they need to ingest to maintain their performance levels.
None of that compares to the number of calories that the media says Michael Phelps ate during his training for the Beijing Olympics. It was a supposed 12,000 Calories per day to fuel his 5 to 6 hours of training. (He has since come out saying he did not eat that much. Let’s just...more

If Santa's sleigh were pulled by bikes, then the Trek Stache 7 29+ would be Rudolph. At first glance, you might wonder what's up with this glowing purple bike with its crazy looking chainstay, oversize 3.0" wide tires, boost 148/110 hub spacing, 110mm of front travel and 180mm disc brakes. But point it toward a trail - hell, toward our parking lot's stairs - and you'll find yourself with a huge grin on your face. There's a reason why you'll hit lines you never thought possible, roll over obstacles and soak up bumps like you have rear travel. Every so often, we like to take time out from our routine to tell you about the great folks that make Mellow Johnny's what it is. One such chap: bike mechanic, Jonathan Neve. He sat down between repair tickets with MJ's sales guru, Andre Chelliah. We learn about everything from his upbringing in the Midwest to his appreciation of the fashion of the British Regency Court.
You've been in the industry for a couple years now, can you give us a summary of your cycling related work?
I stumbled into the industry shortly after I started commuting by bike for the first time as an adult, while I was living in Nebraska in 2009. I got my foot in the door at a local bike shop where the service manager took kindly to me and let me help build bikes before the build-out of the space was finished. I worked there for pizza and beer for a few weeks before they hired me on full time. Two years later I took over managing the shop after countless hours of rapid growth, race support/team development, hundreds of custom builds and wheel builds, and a tremendous...more
This is an urban adventure-maker and common sense commuter. Stealthy, light, fast, quiet and ready for whatever your destination. All four models of the Bad Boy feature a lightweight 6061 aluminum frame that features a more aggressive- than-most "urban geometry," which means its position and angles deliver quick responsiveness while keeping the rider’s head up for better awareness in traffic. Furthermore, you get quick stopping power from disc brakes and, if moving toward more equipped models, ultimate comfort from a radical single-bladed HeadShok Solo DL50 and Fatty DL50 front suspension.
Many of the models also feature the Systems Integration Si Urban 3D forged, single-piece OPI bar and stem with integrated light, so you won't have to worry about remembering your light ever again. And, what's even better is the price tag: the base model Bad Boy 4 starts at around $750 and the well equipped Bad Boy 1 (with an integrated rear hub / 8-speed gear) up around $1800.
We guarantee you that this bike will not only turn heads, but make you feel super confident wherever the...more

These Twin Six jerseys have great design and also a great price point, at around $80. Plus, they're made here in the USA and feature all the technical aspects of racing jerseys, like three deep pockets, hidden zips and breathable fabrics. OK, it just got really hot. Heat brings a whole new challenge to riding, where your simple goal of training can turn into damaging nightmare if you aren't properly nourished and hydrated. Eddie Martinez, our Floor Manager and Bike Buyer, gives us his educated take on the subject.
Hydration: Before, during, and after.
First, we must stress that everyone is different, and your fluid and nutrition requirements may be much different than your mates. So, you need to pay attention to what works for you.
In the hot months, keep your bottle of water with you on or off the bike. Water is never bad. Start sipping water 4 hours before your ride, and continue at that sipping pace through the day. Don't chug it all at once. Let your body absorb it completely over time. In hot weather, blood is headed away from the gut toward the skin and muscles in order to keep you cool. With less blood flow in the digestive system, the body can't process water fast enough and you end up just peeing it out.
During my rides, I drink about 16 ounces per hour. This...more

Does your lower back hurt after a long ride? Do your hands feel like they’re falling asleep mid-ride? Do your hips or hamstrings feel tight or is there discomfort in your feet? All of these issues likely point to an improper fit on your bike. Aside from the general discomfort you may feel while riding, there are real consequences to not being set up right: an overall decrease in performance, unnecessary wear and tear on your bike and gear, and, in many instances, the potential for injury.
Here at Mellow Johnny’s, we want to be make sure that you love riding your bike - not only because you have the best bike for your riding style, but also because you have the best fit possible. To that end, we offer two services that will help you dial in your position and ensure that you have the best possible fit for the riding you do.

On a typical Saturday morning - while most of us are still asleep or just starting in on our first cup of coffee - you’ll find Kevin Girkins cranking his way toward Lake Travis on the shoulder of Highway 71. As one of the best amateur riders in the country, there is not a spare moment that Kevin doesn’t seem to be training for his next competition. This year, Kevin rode with Elbowz Racing in many of the nation’s most prominent races, including Joe Martin, Tulsa Tough, North Star and Nationals. And, later this fall, he's on the road again for some more great competition. To say the least, it's amazing to work with someone so dedicated to racing and an added bonus that he's incredibly humble and down-to-earth. We caught up with him after one of his typical 60+ mile Saturday rides and talked with him about what’s a part of his essential summer weekend ride.more
If off-road riding is your thing, you’re likely aware of the tubeless trend. Companies like Stan's NoTubes have advertisements in nearly every mountain bike magazine, many tire and rim manufacturers boast tubeless ready capability and nearly all higher-end mountain bikes come standard with tubeless compatible wheelsets installed.
So, what’s tubeless all about? Why make the conversion? Here are a just a few considerations:
1. Get Better Traction
Get ready for a smoother ride and the ability to maintain traction in rough terrain. The goal in biking is to keep the tire on the ground as much as possible - not bouncing off objects. While suspension does the majority of the work in absorbing impact and keeping the tires on the ground, tire pressure is the second most important factor. In a tubeless system, the ability to run a lower tire pressure means you can maintain more ground contact and the tire can wrap around objects. As an example, a 175lb rider running a 2.2” 29er tire can safely ride PSI in the mid-20s without a fear of losing control or...more
The new Ballista road helmet Bontrager is coming soon to Mellow Johnny's...and it's both incredibly light and fast. The design itself stems from a request from Jens Voight, who needed a helmet with less drag. To say the least, Bontrager succeeded. It's a full 48 grams faster than Specialized Evade, and 58 grams faster than Giro Air Attack. The six, strategically placed vents maximize airflow over the rider's head without increasing drag. Plus, it also has a new no sweat silicone band around the forehead pad insert, to keep sweat out of the rider's eyes. We will have these in store soon and invite you to come in and try one on. We think you'll like it.more

No matter what the time you stop in, you won't miss any of the action. We have great coffee and amazing espresso from Stumptown and it's made by some of the best barristas in Austin. We also feature great pastry, bagels, smoothies and snacks from various local purveyors. Come on in and make MJ's and Juan Pelota your Tour headquarters. We look forward to cheering with you!more

Ann & Roy Butler Hike & Bike Trail: After the spectacular mile-long boardwalk was completed in late 2014, the Ann & Roy Butler Hike & Bike Trail (also known as Lady Bird Lake trail) now makes an incredible 10-mile loop through downtown. The trail is great for bikers of all ability; it’s flat, features crushed stone or pavement in some sections, and is wide enough to accommodate bikers, walkers, runners and the occasional stroller. There are great stops along the way and any number of ways to enter or leave the trail. And, if you need to cut the ride short or make it longer, there are several pedestrian friendly bridges that you can cross to complete a loop. Best for a weekday ride, as it can get quite crowded on the weekends!

For the past decade, POC has made a name in the action sport apparel industry by manufacturing some of the world’s best helmets for skiing, snowboarding and biking. This Swedish company merges thousands of hours of scientific safety research together with a sleek design to create award winning gear that has a timeless look and serious safety credibility.
POC gives you good reason to feel secure - hell, they even design a body armor made of visco-elastic polymer dough. Battle ready stuff. But in all seriousness, whether it’s downhill skiing or downhill mountain biking, POC knows the risks associated with each sport they design for. We’ve recently written about the suspension technology of the Trek Remedy. It’s an amazing bike. Technically advanced and built to handle some of the toughest terrain. This is the kind of bike that dudes are wearing body armor while riding.
The thing is, it’s a bit hard to test the advanced suspension while tooling around in our parking lot.
To “Remedy” the situation, we’ve just brought in a few high end demo bikes. We currently have a Remedy 9, Fuel 9, and Lush S on our floor. For fifty dollars you can take one of these out for twenty four hours and experience the bike on actual trail. If you love the bike, we’ll gladly apply the rental fee to the purchase price. If you decide not to, no worries. For the price of a standard rental, you had the opportunity to ride one of the nicest bikes on the mountain bike market.

Purchasing a custom bike can be a complicated process. Awesome, yes. But still overwhelming at times. There are simply so many things to decide upon. When buying a car you decide upon the model, color, and maybe 4 or 5 trim levels. A custom bicycle, on the other hand, has an almost infinite number of variables.
Just building up a set of wheels to go with your bike will require you to decide upon the hub, rim, spokes, spoke lacing, spoke count, spoke nipple type, tire style and size. It can get rather absurd.
And that’s not what this process should be about. A custom bike is a reward. It’s something motivating, exciting and unique. An expression of your love of cycling.
Since our opening in 2008 we’ve done a brisk business in custom bikes. We’re lucky enough to have very good sales people, a very good service staff, and thanks to our partnership with Pedal Hard Training Center, very good bike fitters. Our sock game is pretty strong these days. Our own branded socks came first, then Ten Speed Hero and Twin Six. Now we’ve made our way all the way up to the rarefied air of The Athletic. We’re not quite sure how we reached such dizzying heights, but we do know that our staff and customers love these socks.
We’ve heard a few stories about the birth of the brand. Some are obvious exaggerations. Others perhaps hint at the truth. Airport carpets and pick-up basketball games seem to feature heavily in their history. One thing that we’re certain of, is that socks are one of the most inexpensive ways you can add a bit of personality to your clothing. We know that The Athletic socks look awesome, and we know that we are the only dealer in town.
Come by before any of our weekend rides to see our selection. Or stop by the next time you’re downtown. Grab at macchiato at the café, look at some dream bikes and check out all of our...more
Tear things down and inspect every part. Spend your time improving upon each feature. Forget about neon, or over-branding… The brand is quality.
Kitsbow proclaims themselves to be obsessive about their products and craftsmanship, and we tend to agree. The clothing is made with a fanaticism that beggars belief. Subdued styling. Impressive textiles. Obscene attention to detail.more
The Remedy series of Trek mountain bikes is an award winning platform. Revered by cyclists who aren’t scared of a bit of rock, or a little ledge. With 140mm of front and rear suspension, newly engineered by Penske, The Remedy has the ability to absorb whatever the trail can throw at you.
This bike really is a technological marvel. The thought and science that goes into the Remedy is just mind boggling. We deal with bikes every day, and often have difficulty keeping up with the endless innovations. For example, the Remedy is outfitted with DRCV + RE:aktiv suspension, Evo Link, ABP and Simplified Wheel Size. All brilliant bit of tech that sometimes get lost amongst each other.
This article will help to break down these marketing terms, and explain just how this marketing jargon translates to the trail.more
The Emonda line of bikes has already made waves. Introduced last year by Trek, their top of the line SLR 10 is an astonishing 10.25 pound production bike. It's carbon everything, with every component spec'd for the absolute lightest weight. But let's be honest, not all of us need a 15k bike that weighs less than our cat.
What the SLR 10 really showcased, was the prowess of Trek engineers and the complexity of their manufacturing process. With the introduction of the brand new Emonda ALR line, Trek is now able to offer the Emonda to a much wider audience. They've taken a race proven geometry and given the consumer many more options.more
You're going to do it. The bike works. You've got a new helmet, a bag to carry your gear and a safe route to work.
Well, let us be the first to offer our congratulations! We firmly believe that commuting by bike can be life changing, and we've designed our business to support and encourage the urban cyclist.
Here is a list of the top 5 ways that Mellow Johnny's can make your downtown Austin commute that much better.more
Skratch nutrition products took the world by storm a few years back. Created by a PHD nutritionist who worked with the pro cycling peloton, Skratch is the inevitable conclusion of years of research and real world testing.
While things seem simple on the surface, nutrition for athletes is a highly complex science. Not only does your food need to be palatable, it also needs to provide balanced energy, be absorbed quickly, and cause little to no gastrointestinal distress. That's a big ask.
Enter the Skratch Fruit Drop. It's checks all these boxes, comes in two flavors (Orange and Raspberry), and is backed by a ridiculous amount of science.
To read the full white pages on this product click here.
Or if your feeling a bit wild, skip the article and pick up a pouch before your next ride. Like all Skratch products, these have a subtle, not overly sweet taste that our customers appreciate.more
For any cyclists, especially the urban commuter, safety lights are a must have. Luckily, in the past few years bike lighting has become less expensive, longer lasting, and just plain better. We've seen a lot of innovative new products hit Kickstarter, and it's ridiculous how much light a modern day LED can produce.
We've just picked up a product we really like. Designed to alert your presence to the world, as well as define a safe passing zone for vehicles. The X-Fire is a standard 5 LED flashing light that also features a laser projected bike lane. It's cool, unique, and really safe, with lasers bright enough to be seen over head and street lights.
Our demo is on a bike upstairs. Come check out the light, and see what we consider to be a great option for any commuter.more
The more Seven Cycles we sell, the more we appreciate the brand. That's saying something. From the perfect welds, to the fit driven design, Seven is what other frame builders strive to be.
Their brand is growing. Not because of full page ad buys and a huge marketing budget. Seven is growing through word of mouth. It's an organic, healthy growth that ensures the quality of their product never slips. It was this quality, after all, that initiated the growth.
Our latest stock Seven is this Evergreen S. It turned out beautifully, and our service department outfitted the Ti frame with a full Shimano drive train and brakes. To round out the package, we built up a bombproof wheel set featuring Hed C+ rims and Shimano hubs. Guaranteed to ride well, and be incredibly durable.
Come by the shop to check this bike out, or talk to a staff member about all the models Seven produces. While the Evergreen is made from titanium, Seven Cycles does amazing things with carbon and steel as well.more
Trek has been producing 29" mountain bikes for a long time. Over the years they've refined the process, making adjustments to frame geometry and component spec with each new generation. With feedback from both pro and amateur riders, Trek's mountain bikes have become industry leading. We consider them to be one of the best bike values around.
With the introduction of this new 29+ category, Trek proves that it is a development driven company, not content with complacency. We see a lot of new bikes here at the shop, but this Stache 7 has been test ridden by practically all of our employees. We love it!more

Commuting by bike is an adventure. It's a way to discover a new appreciation for the city you live in. A way to exercise, without it feeling like exercise. And a way to see the world in a manner which you may have forgotten.
The question is, how do you start?
We've put together a package of some of our best selling and most practical items, to make it simple for anyone interested in commuting by bike. These are by no means the cheapest items of each category. Instead, they are tried an true bikes and accessories that can stand up to the abuse of daily commuting. Much of what we're listing is used daily by our staff of urban cyclists.
The best part, is that a bike and all the accessories you'll need to start commuting comes in under $1000. And the only fuel you'll need is an extra sandwich at lunch.more
The short answer here is, "Probably more often than you think." A bike chains job is to transfer every watt of power from your cranks to your back wheel, and that's a big undertaking. With performance bikes becoming lighter, and cassettes offering more gears in the same amount of spacing (i.e thinner chains), it's not uncommon for heavier riders to wear through a chain in as little as 1,000 miles. That's just a few months for someone who rides every weekend.
Rider weight, terrain, even wheel size and chainstay length can all affect the life expectancy of your chain so it's hard for us to set an exact mileage number for replacement.
Although there is no cut and dry length of time a road bike chain will last, there are several tools to measure chain wear, and some easy ways to extend your chains life. The best way is to maintain a clean and lubricated drivetrain. This means cleaning the grime off of your chain, and lubricating it every three or four rides. We love Rock & Roll Road chainlube, and a small bottle will easily last six months.more
Trainer workouts are to fun as:
a. Cavendish is to climbing
b. Cipollini is to restrained
c. Sagan is to slow
In the past we would of accepted any of these answers as correct. It was a general consensus that the trainer would make you strong, but you would sacrifice a bit of your cycling soul with each hour spent on one. That's what so appealing about the Wahoo Fitness KICKR, the thought that you can gain strength over the winter months and actually have fun doing it.
There are several key factors that separate the KICKR from other trainers on the market, and I believe that these fall into two major groups. The first is the hardware and physical design of the trainer. The second is the software the trainer supports.more

We talk about the Boone a lot. It's just the perfect all around bike, and an absolute animal on the rough stuff. Our cycling heroes (Katie Compton and Sven Nys) ride this bike, and the technology has moved beyond "innovative" to the realm of "proven."
With Trek's new Boone 9, they have added a front thru axle for a stiffer front end and more confident handling, replaced the Ultegra Di2 with mechanical Ultegra, and dropped the price an astonishing $1,500. Our Brand Manager just picked up the Boone 9 pictured below, and after riding the Castell Grind this past weekend, he can't stop talking about it.

Our streak of awesome bikes and amazing Austin frame builders continues!
This latest project was a very small custom Tomii Cycles cross bike. The frame turned out beautifully, and we absolutely love the JL custom paint. We've no doubt that this will bring it's owner joy for years to come.more
Over the last few years, Austin has become home to some incredible frame builders. We're always excited to get the opportunity to build one of these bikes, and our latest pro-build has to be one of our favorites. An Icarus Frames lugged steel road bike, with a beautiful steel fork and Campy components. This is a local company doing some amazing work.
Our service department is clinical in the way that they treat these builds. The logos on the bar end plugs at the same angle. The stem cap and headset decals aligned. Everything put together with an attention to detail that is hard to find these days.

Andre Chelliah is one of our shop superstars. Not only is he one of our best custom bike salespeople, Andre is passionate about all things cycling. He's always willing to lend a hand and able to instantly put our customers at ease.
We recently sat down with Andre to learn more about his work history, retail philosophy, and all things style related.
1. How did you end up at Mellow Johnny's? Can you give us a summary of your work history?
Mellow Johnny’s has been a dream job of mine since I moved to Austin to attend school at The University of Texas. Previous to Mellow Johnny’s, I worked at Freewheeling bicycles. Freewheeling was the oldest bike shop in Austin before they closed in 2013. I owe a lot of my understanding of the rich bike culture in Austin to the owner, Angie Prescott.
2. Everyone one of our staff seem to have their own retail philosophy. Care to explain how you approach a bike sale?
For myself and a lot of my coworkers, bikes represent more than just a way to get from point A to point B. Bikes represent the unique, timeless experience...more
The Silque S and SL are two of our most popular bikes for female riders, and Trek has invested quite a bit of time and effort to create a line of bikes, built from the ground up for women riders. This is more than a saddle and paint change. Silque bikes boast a custom geometry, carbon layup and build kit for the unique needs of female cyclists.
Borrowing the innovative IsoSpeed Decoupler from the Domane line, Silque bikes are able to provide more vertical compliance while maintaining lateral stiffness. This is a crucial piece of tech for women riders.
Even the nicest carbon bikes generally have rider weight limits in the low 200 lb. range. A female rider weighing 140 lbs. simply won't have the mass to flex the frame, and the resulting ride will be uncomfortably stiff. Pair this with Trek's size specific carbon layup and you can see the lengths Trek has gone to produce one of the best riding bikes on the market.more
Cielo, the frame manufacturing arm of Chris King, has quietly been turning out some of the best steel frames we've ever seen. Their bikes proves to us that it's still possible to create a performance race bike with soul. And while most competitive riders turn over their bikes every season or two, Cielo is crafting frames that defy the "race bike as a tool" mentality. These are just too pretty.
Our GM has one, and claims it to be one of the best riding bikes he has ever owned. One of our mechanics just ordered one, and has been obsessing about the build. The incomparable Radavist posted a fantastic review on his site, and the Road Racer was voted a top 25 road bike by Men's Journal.more
Public bikes, and their attention to detail has always impressed us. We've written articles in the past admiring their unique business model and take on the city bike. Nothing is overlooked, and Public takes the time to add quality touches that other cycling manufacturers don't even consider. With the launch of their new balance bikes for children, Public has displayed the same attention to detail, only in a much smaller package.
Boasting an assortment of colors and two frame styles to choose from, these balance bikes are sure to please even the most discerning four year old. The included color matched bell, adjustable saddle height, inflatable tires and steel frame create a practically perfect parts spec. And somehow, Public has manged to put all of this together for a very reasonable $129.
We have several of these in stock and on the floor right now, and the weather is perfect for exploring. Bring the kiddos to the...more
The brilliant thing about Trek's Project One, is that it really lets you pick and choose the exact parts spec and paint that you're looking for. This allows you to stay within the framework of Trek bikes, but create something unique.
Our latest Project One is an Emonda, built up with the Aeolus wheels of an SLR 9, but the mechanical Dura-Ace of the SLR 8. It's a simple swap, but one that most cycling companies aren't willing, or even set up to do.
Project One makes customizations like this one easy, maintains the warranty and doesn't cost anything more than the difference in parts or paint. To build up your own custom Trek, visit the Project One page or come see us. We'll be happy to talk you through the options.more
The highest quality products, served with the utmost care. The Juan Pelota Cafe is a microcosm of our shop philosophy, distilled down and parceled out hundreds of times each day.
While we always imagined the cafe as a meeting place for cyclists, which it still is, Juan Pelota has slowly evolved into a stand alone destination, serving not only Mellow Johnny's customers, but tourists, locals and downtown workers alike. And while we have the standard coffee bar baked goods, the managers have also been searching out and partnering with some key vendors to provide a myriad of healthier options.more
When we were in the process of selecting a new clothing line for our shop, one of our staffers made a pretty accurate observation about Castelli clothing:
"Basically every team at the Driveway is wearing Castelli. Road racers are some of the pickiest, so there has to be a reason that they all choose it."
And yes, Road Racers, you are picky about clothing. And so is Mellow Johnny's. We obsess daily about chamois placement, leg grippers, and t-shirt construction. If you demand the best from your bike, why would you not also demand the best technical clothing to ride that bike?
Castelli has been creating athletic clothing, in one form or another, for over a century. A visit to their website will provide you with a timeline that is impressive not only in duration, but also in innovation. Silk skinsuits for Coppi. The first to use aerodynamic Lycra in the 70's. The first to use sublimation dye and colored Lycra in the 80's.
We've mentioned before that Public Bikes are the best kept secret at the shop, and we still feel that way. Dutch bike inspired designs at very reasonable prices. Most Public Bikes, like the V7 pictured below, come with paint matched fenders and racks. This makes them one of the best, and beautiful, casual bikes around.
The Public V7 pictured below retails for $549, and will include a professional fit, our fantastic customer service, and a lifetime of free brake and derailleur adjustments. For downtown Austinites, this is the bike. A seven speed townie with a comfortable riding position and quality accents, not found on other bikes in this price range. Eddie Martinez is one of our most outspoken team members. Full of good-natured bravado, and exceptionally positive, Eddie is an expert in customer service. With years of bike shop experience and an interest in bio-mechanics, he is also one of our best bike fitters. 1. You've been in the industry for a few years now. Can you give us a brief snaphot of your work history?
I started my retail career at Runtex, a specialty running shoe store. I worked there for 8 years in roles from sales to manager. I became proficient in running shoes, running related injures and the bio-mechanics of running. I have been in the bike industry for about 5 years. At my former shop, I started in sales, then learned the skill of fitting, which has become a specialty of mine. I was also sales floor manager, buyer of soft goods and bikes, as well as scheduling for the staff.

Get outside and go ride. Pack some things and turn down that gravel road between here and Lockhart. Or head out to Ft. Davis and spend a couple days camping in the mountains. Re-read your favorite book and find someplace without cell-phone coverage. Ride without training for a race, or trying to win a KOM on Strava.
These are all things that the Trek 920 inspires.
We love this bike. Not because it's the lightest, sexiest, or most expensive. We love it because it makes us want to ride. And that may be the best review we can give.
The 920 is essentially a touring bike chassis, set upon a mountain bike engine, with time trial bits thrown in for good measure. That's pretty confusing, but trust us, the sum is certainly greater than the parts.
The mountain bike drivetrain on the 920 provides the greatest possible gear range for riding while under load, and the larger 29" wheels allow you a plethora of tire options. With the increased tire size and air volume, the 920 provides an extremely smooth ride. On top of all this is a brilliantly overbuilt aluminum...more
When it comes to professional cyclists, my knowledge is paradoxical. The more I ride. The more I learn about them. The less I understand.
This month’s cycling hero started as an homage to Milan-San Remo, the first and longest of the true spring classics. The 2015 edition will occur on the 22nd of March and cover an astonishing 181 miles in just under seven hours. It’s an incomprehensible thing. The start to a classics campaign unflinching in its brutality.
Google Milan-San Remo. Find the list of past winners and scroll down. Not surprisingly, Merckx holds the records for the most wins. Poulidor is there. Van Looy, Coppi, Sean Kelly, Zabel, and so many other giants of the sport. One of the most intriguing is a one time winner from Brittany, who was perhaps more famous for grand tours than classics, Louison Bobet.
Louison was the first to win the Tour de France three years in succession (1953 – 1955), and this will always be considered his greatest cycling achievement. But Bobet was also something of a rouleur, able to win several one day races and classics....more
Strip away the excess. Pare things down to their most basic and beauty will follow. Not as an intention, but as a result.
This Blackburn multi-tool is a representative of that principle. It has a 3, 4, 5, and 6mm hex, flat head screwdriver and 15mm wrench built into the one piece aluminum body. Exactly the right amount of tool for 90% of riders.
On most bikes, the Toolminator will allow you to do the following:

Seven Cycles is a Massachusetts based manufacturer of beautiful bikes. Incredibly professional and fit driven, this is a company creating lifetime bikes for lifetime riders. Our latest custom build is a Seven Cycles Sola SL 27.5.

Cross Country Mountain Bikes are awesome things. Like rally cars, these are off-road vehicles designed for pure speed. Sure, you sacrifice a bit of suspension travel, but cross country mountain biking isn’t about dropping off 6 foot ledges. It’s about choosing the best line through a rock garden and being able to pin it through flowy singletrack. While much of the old guard scoffs at riding a full suspension cross country bike, the fact is that suspension technology has advanced greatly. The slight weight penalty (and we mean very slight) is offset by more confident riding and the ability to shave seconds off each and every technical section.
The Trek Superfly FS has been at the forefront of cross country mountain biking for some time now, and this new line up of 2015 bikes is pretty stellar. Trek keeps pushing the envelope, and their mountain bikes really are ahead of the curve. It’s a racing pedigree built upon professional riders at a world class level. This is why bike companies sponsor cycling teams. A pro rider’s feedback is invaluable when designing something as...more
We’re blessed with an almost unprecedented amount of urban green space here in Austin. You can roll out from MJ’s, in the heart of downtown, and hop directly onto the Lady Bird Lake Trail, immediately immersing you in green, water, and vistas. A quick ride over to the Barton Springs Greenbelt, and a few miles of trail later, a commuter can pop out near home in South Austin. It's amazing trail riding in the middle of the city. You can commute by mountain bike and reach the core of our busy town without encountering stoplights, traffic, or cars.
The challenge is, the Greenbelt is open to everyone, and as the weather warms, the trail gets crowded. With cyclists. Hikers. Runners. Dogs. Earbud escapists. Daydreamers. Everybody. With people in varying degrees of skill and environmental awareness, a bell is an under-appreciated and non-threatening tool to keep you and the rest of the world safe and social.
Calling out, “On your left!” is effective, but often disconcerting and many times taken as hostile and "yelly." We want to be good bike advocates, so let's rely on a...more

If any of the above inspires you to get on your bike, it may be time to do a bit of preventative maintenance. Over long periods of disuse, lube disappears, tires rot and hundred of little things can affect the mechanical quality of your bicycle.

A home repair stand is a great addition to any garage or bike room. Not only does it provide a secure platform for mechanical work, a bike stand also makes your everyday biking life that much nicer. Changing tires, adjusting derailleurs and lubing your chain is no longer an exercise in frustration.
No more tire marks on the wall.
No more knuckle bashing or awkward positions.
We like both the durability and simplicity of the Feedback Sports Classic Work Stand. The lightweight aluminum construction supports up to 85 lbs, and folds for storage. In addition, the adjustable height is easily controlled through a series of quick release cams. This is a product we keep in stock and a great gift for someone who works on their own bikes, or is an avid rider.more
We are daily witness to the damage that bad saddles, chamois’, shoes and gloves can cause. There is an entire industry comprised of anti-friction creams. There are companies that only manufacture insoles for cyclists. In fact, it’s pretty easy to tumble down the rabbit of niche cycling related products designed solely to make you comfortable when riding. Contact points are something cyclists obsess over.
This obsession is evident when looking at cycling shoe manufacturers and their challenge to create a lightweight, well-fitting and aesthetically pleasing design. The behind the scenes work that goes into this process is incredible. Each company tries to create their own fit philosophy and brand identity, while appealing to the largest possible market. It’s a tough nut to crack.
We’ve just received a shipment of Bontrager’s newest high end road shoe, the XXX Road, and think that these guys have come pretty close.more
A proper touring bike is a beast of burden. It’s not the fastest, generally not the fanciest, but it knows how to work. Touring bikes are designed to carry large loads over long distances. Everything from gear selection, frame geometry, wheel construction, and frame material is built with the single purpose of schlepping you and your gear. We’ve recently received Trek’s touring specific 520 Disc and love the well thought out design. Listed below are a few key features that distinguish the 520 from a standard road bike that you add racks to.
1. Frame material
The 520 boasts a butted chromoly steel frame. While not as light as a full carbon rocket ship, the steel frame is much more durable, provides a great ride quality and is capable of supporting loads far better than any other frame material. Steel is the material of choice for these bikes, no matter what your budget.more
With classics season looming and Cross World Championships this weekend, we thought we’d talk a bit about one of the baddest, most charming, most talented, best looking dudes to ever ride a bike.
Roger de Vlaeminck
This is a Belgian who was only interested in soccer, right up until the time that his older brother, Erik, became a pro rider. Whether it was his competitive spirit, or something entirely else, Roger immediately picked up his bike and said, “Yeah, that sounds good. I think I’ll be a professional cyclist too.”
During his first amateur road racing season in 1965, Roger only managed to win one race.
“He’s no Erik,” the neighbors would comment.
During his second season, he won 25 times.
“Look at him go,” the neighbors now cooed.
De Vlaeminck continued to chase his brother, riding cyclocross in the winter and road in the summer. In 1968 he won the World Amateur Cyclocross championships in Luxembourg, the very same week that his brother became the World Professional Cyclocross...more
You know, some people think it’s gauche to paint a titanium bike. It’s clear to us, that they have never seen what Seven Cycles can do.
Our latest custom build is this show stopping Axiom S. The owner made some really wise decisions on part selection, and the end result is a durable bike with superior road feel.
This is a bike for someone who puts in a lot of miles.
We built up the custom wheels and the owner worked with Pedal Hard to get the fit dialed.

In addition, we've got spare lenses, earsocks, bolts and frames, if you'd like to build a custom piece to match your new bike.more
Peter Finklea is a Mellow Johnny's institution. Not only is he exceptionally knowledgeable about all things cycling, Peter is one of the most humble, thorough, and hard-working employees we've ever come across. 1.You've been in the industry for years now, can you give us a snapshot of your cycling related work experience?
I've been in the bicycle retail industry for almost 30yrs and have held several positions. A mechanic for the first 20ish years w/Sales mixed in (Austin). Service Manager for two years (Palo Alto). Purchasing of Parts & Accessories for six years (San Francisco & MJ's). And most recently Manager of MJ's Rental Dept. and Warranties.
2. What got you interested in bikes initially?
I realized from a very early age, bikes were the most exciting and accessible way to establish independence. Just get on your bike and go. In my high school years we had a Bicycle...more
Gravel bikes are interesting things. In the Venn diagram of cycling, they fit somewhere in that tiny space where road, touring and cyclocross overlap. While almost all bike shop employees have been thrashing their personal road bikes on gravel roads for years, the movement has slowly entered into the mainstream cyclist’s consciousness. Events like the Dirty Kanza, Rouge Roubaix, and even our own Graveltopia ride have helped introduce the consumer to the fun of gravel riding.more
Well, that was a whirlwind.
Watching the best in the nation slide around in the mud tells me that cyclocross is hard for everyone. As an age group rider, that's comforting in an odd way. The course is a dynamic thing. A second gained and a second lost.
Thanks to everyone who came out and supported the event. Enjoy our gallery of employees, pros and everyone in between.

The great thing about Seven Cycles is that there is no price difference for going custom. Because each frameset is made by hand in the US, the builders can easily adapt to a specific customers wants & needs. This allows our sales staff to customize not only your component selection, but also how you sit on and interact with the bike.
Our latest custom Seven is an all rounder, created by a customer who likes to ride, but isn't a road racer. Going disc allowed for the use of the wider Hed Belgium + rims and gave the option to run larger tires for gravel and dirt rides. The Ti frame is bombproof, and the Ultegra Di2 drivetrain is a smart choice considering that the price jump to Dura-Ace doesn't provide an equal jump in shifting performance.more
Custom wheels are wonderful things. Lately, we've been making several pairs for custom bikes, road racers prepping for next season and touring cyclists traveling across continents. The defining characteristic of these custom wheels is simply that you, the consumer, choose the rim, spoke and hub combo. The parts are ordered by us and the wheel is built in-house.
Why go through all this trouble? Well, that answer is a bit more complicated than it appears. Obviously, there are those that simply want something aesthetically pleasing. A limited edition Chris King Sour Apple Hub will probably never come stock on any bike, but it's a beautiful thing.more
One of the many benefits of living in Austin, is that the winters are generally mild. We certainly complain a lot on our rare below freezing days, but at the back of our mind most Texans are well aware that we've got it pretty easy. Winter riding is a real option, and it doesn't require $300 soft shell jackets or ski pants. Temperatures can change greatly in the course of a few hours here, so packable, versatile clothing is the order of the day.
Two of our favorite pieces for winter riding are the Super Prestige Glove ($45) and Power Cap 2 ($25), both produced by Louis Garneau. These are items owned by most of the staff and provide just enough warmth to keep you comfortable in that 35-55 degree range prevalent during a Texas winter.more
We've just built up this beautiful, hydraulic disc Domane 6.9. With Dura-Ace Di2, and the IsoSpeed decoupler, this is a bike at the forefront of cycling technology.
Witnessing Trek invest the time and effort to make a disc brake road bike of this quality, it's hard not to think that this is the future of road cycling. As a shop full of cross racers, we're also hoping that Trek makes new versions of the Boone with the same thru axle design. Confident cornering and braking are practically guaranteed with this fantastic set up.
Check out the gallery below, then swing by the shop to see this beauty in person.more
Purpose built commuter bikes are elusive things. They come and go, each lauded as the perfect solution for the urban commuter. Kickstarter is awash with start-ups who each think that they’ve cracked the code.
What we’ve always worried about with these one off designs, is the day to day durability. If a bike is truly made for urban commuting, it needs to handle quite a bit of abuse. If your integrated lights fail, will small parts be available? If you forget to remove the integrated iPhone mount and someone steals it, can it be replaced? Urban cycling is rough on components and gear because a commuting bike exists towards the utility end of the cycling spectrum. A 10 pound Emonda is cared for, the tires checked and the chain lubed before each ride. A commuter bike is shoved into a rack at ACL, or left exposed to the elements while you are at work.
What makes the Trek Lync so appealing is its mix of forward thinking ideas, tempered by the business sense and experience of...more
This morning, Rolando Roman and the Texas CX Project crew hosted a preview of the CX Nationals course. We were lucky enough to be in attendance and able to take a few pictures of some of the key features.
Overall, the course design is extremely impressive. This will be a true test of fitness, and riders able to pace themselves on the back to back run ups of the bottom section will be able to ride away from recovering athletes on the N side of Andrew Zilker Rd.
We'll keep everyone updated throughout the build, and hope to have a filmed lap as soon as the course is complete.more
At Mellow Johnny's, we're sorta nuts for cyclocross. We watch European races with names we can't really pronounce. We listen to Flemish commentary and fancy that we understand a bit of it. We spend way too much time each Monday discussing the weekends events, and our managers pull their hair out each cross season trying to accommodate all of the day off requests. Needless to say, we're pretty excited that Cross Nationals is happening in our back yard.
Below is a list of events happening at MJ's over Nationals week. For racers, our service staff is prepped and ready to take care of all your needs. We're a ten minute bike ride from the course and are happy to dial in your race machine after every pre-ride. Our GM just told me the story of how he got on the podium at Cross Worlds in '06, and I work right next to an employee who was 9th at Road Race Nationals a few months ago. Our staff is full of seasoned riders just like these, who get overly excited talking about tire pressure and tubular cement.
Spectators, just sit back and enjoy the vibe. Cross is physically brutal,...more
Poler items convey a sense of ease and earthiness. Their products inspire us to relish the everyday adventures of our lives, and we are so excited to feature this brand in store.
If you've never heard of Poler, check out the quote from their own website that pretty much sums the brand up. And next time you're around, swing by the shop to check out our assortment of Poler hoodies, hats, bags and tees. This is a company offering good value and a great point of view.
"It’s stuff that is made for people that have adventures all over the world while wearing jeans, a t-shirt, and sneakers. It’s for people that wonder why everyone is trying to pretend they are going to do first ascents on alpine peaks instead of celebrating the fact that they are having adventures that are awesome in their own way."more
The Juan Pelota Cafe is one of our shop's greatest treasures. The vibe and quality of products complements the bikes we sell, and the cafe has built its own separate clientele of downtown employees and residents. If you've never been, swing by the next time you're out. The cafe has a knack of making every customer feel special.
Learn more about one of Pelota's star employees, Laney.
1. Where did you grow up and what brought you to Austin?
I grew up in rural central Pennsylvania near Hershey. I went to school in Philly and started working at Penn State Children’s Hospital as a nurse in the PICU. I worked there 5 years and decided I wanted a new adventure. I had never been to Austin (or even Texas) and didn’t know a single person here. That sounded perfect. I packed up what fit in my car and arrived 2 months later.more
Cycling and coffee. These things are so inextricably linked that practically any ride not leaving from a bike shop, rolls out from a coffee bar. Chris King sells espresso tampers. Rapha sells mugs, and there are numerous cycling inspired coffee blends available.
Juan Pelota, our in house café, has always sought out the absolute best products to serve and sell. The staff is constantly training, hosting coffee science classes and perfecting their craft. It's an almost fanatical search for the perfect cup of coffee, and the staff of Juan Pelota has left no stone unturned.
For anyone interested in enhancing their own coffee experience, or anyone struggling to find a gift for the cyclist in their life, we present the following products. All of these are in stock and available for purchase in store.
1. Hario V60 Gooseneck Kettle

Bike racks have come a long way in the past few years. Gone are the days of constantly starring into your rearview mirror and tightening straps every time you stop your car. Today’s racks are simple, effective holders that make transporting your bike easy and secure. One of our favorites is the Kuat Sherpa. We love it because it solves several problems.
1. The Sherpa is made of aluminum, so it weighs much less than most other hitch mount racks.
2. You don’t need to remove any wheels to mount your bike. The Kuat accommodates multiple tire sizes (20”-29”).
3. There is no need to remove mounted bikes to open the lift gate or get into your trunk, the Kuat tilts down to allow access.
4. While the Sherpa can be easily removed, it also tilts up and out of the way when not in use.
5. Because the rack is a hitch mount, it never makes contact with your vehicle. No chipped paint or straps to deal with.
The Sherpa rack also has the ability to fit accept an additional 2 bike tray, for a 4 total bike capacity and includes a cable lock to keep...more
We've long been fans of the Trek 7.2 FX. This bike has been a top seller in our shop for years, and has pretty much dominated our fitness bike category. It's just a great all around bike, at a really accessible price point.
With new 2015 models now on the floor, it's good to see that Trek is continuing the FX tradition of value. They've added a disc brake option to the line up to ensure stopping power under any condition, but even with this upgrade the bike comes in below $600.00, and the non-disc versions are below $500.more
Caitlin is one of our star Mellow Johnny's employees. She's incredibly friendly, rides all the time and is an integral part of our shop sales team. Someone who is able to disabuse you of the idea of bike shop "elitism".
Learn a bit more about Caitlin here:
1. Where did you grow up, and what brought you to Austin?
I grew up in Philadelphia, but came to Austin in June to take a drafting course at UT and decided to stay.
2. First cycling memory?
The ET ride at Universal Studios. I was six or so. I remember crying (a lot) in line because I had never ridden a bike without training wheels and I was convinced I'd have to during the ride.
After that I began riding with my Dad to baseball games in South Philly, I started out following alongside him on the sidewalk while he rode in the street.more

It's hard to break down a piece of Rapha gear. A review of one jersey could carry on for a while, as new details are discovered with each wear. A touch of embroidery on the left sleeve. Embossed zipper covers. Custom grippers. Every detail designed with purpose, and nothing overlooked.
As jaded as bike shop employees can be, there is always a crowd in the receiving area when a box from Rapha arrives. We gather around and sort through the new styles. Feeling the weight of the product and associating the new goods with some of our regulars.
"Todd's gonna buy this one, I guarantee it."
"Oh man, Bernardo was asking about these socks."
And yes, Rapha gear is pricey. Deservedly so. It's a great day when I get to pull out my longsleeve country jersey from a few seasons ago. Something about wearing that jersey makes cycling more fun. I can't afford a closet of Rapha gear, but what I do have I treasure. That's what makes Rapha such a great holiday item.
Being the only retail shop in Texas stocking Rapha gear, we encourage you to come by and try...more

Andrew Gonzales is a key member of the Mellow Johnny's team. Charismatic, friendly and incredibly talented when it comes to anything on two wheels, Andrew is one of our all-star staff members. While his natural habitat is in the basement finishing our most complex bike builds, Andrew can occasionally be found behind the upstairs service counter.

We're fans of Lezyne products at the shop, and recently reviewed some of their budget friendly lights for commuting. In this weeks eblast we're going to look at Lezyne's higher priced/high lumen options, the Meca & Deca drive. Like all Lezyne products, these are beautiful designed pieces of functional art. While we could make you read words about USB charging and aluminum cooling fins, Lezyne done our job for us by producing a couple very nice videos to highlight the features of these amazing lights. Click either of the videos below to learn more about the 900 Lumen Deca Drive, or 1400 Lumen Mega Drive lights. Both in stock now.more

As active Moots and Seven Cycles dealers, we have a lot of experience guiding our clients through the custom bike buying experience. While lengthy and much more involved than buying an off the shelf option, going custom can be a rewarding choice for the discerning customer. The benefit is a bike built for your specific desires. Each part handpicked. Every angle adjusted to meet your exact needs. The risk is that the more details involved exponentially increase the chance of mistake. We've designed this system to eliminate as much of that risk as possible, and provide the best custom buying experience in the industry.
A select group of our customers are forced into the custom bike arena due to their specific genetics. Those customers are quite simply unable to find a stock manufacturer making a bike that fits them correctly, and in order for them to enjoy the sport going custom is really their only option. Overwhelmingly though, the custom bike client is simply someone...more
As most seasoned riders know, proper layering for winter riding is something of an art form. Highly debated subjects, like our epic Knee Warmers Vs. Leg Warmer debate of 2013 take place in bike shops around the globe, and each rider slowly fine tunes their winter gear over the course of a few seasons to suit their particular needs.
We've cobbled together a simple chart outlining what gear we recommend based upon temperature ranges, and are happy to discuss any of these at length. Just remember that these are suggestions based upon our experience, and can change based upon a variety of conditions. We know that people in Minnesota commute in negative temperatures on the regular. As Texans we can hardly wrap our collective heads around that. Anyone who lives above 40 degrees latitude feel free to adjust the degree scale as necessary.more
Kids bikes have come a long way from the coaster braked, banana seat deathtraps that we grew up with. Nowadays there are almost as many bike options for children as there are for adults. And for not much more than a disposable Wal-Mart bike, you can buy a purpose built children's bike, designed for safety and durability by a reputable cycling company. Perhaps most importantly, a bike that is built by experienced mechanics.
As shop employees, we all have fond memories of our first bike and the freedom that bike granted us. The end of the driveway, or end of the street was a brave new world to explore and our imagination often took us much further. It's always our pleasure to introduce someone young to the joys of cycling, and help cultivate that adventurous spirit.
The new line up of Trek children's bikes makes this task much easier. With multiple size options, colors and styles the new lineup is pretty cool. The new KRX, in particular, is perfect for the budding cyclocross...more
Public Bikes are one of our best kept secrets here at the shop. While we like to geek out over carbon bits and hydraulic disc brakes, Public has been consistently creating beautiful, affordable bikes for the everyman and women. Their bikes have been a staple in our shop for years and Public has really captured the look and feel of the classic Dutch City Bike.
Yes, the bike is steel and weighs a bit more than a Trek Emonda. No, you do not have a Dura-Ace option. By Public's own admission, the bikes are designed for, "The person who doesn’t identify themselves as a bicyclist but wants a simple, sturdy bicycle for occasional errands, trips to the Farmer’s Market, or weekend rides in the park."
That philosophy makes sense to a lot of our customers. What's more, the price points fit the concept. Practically every Public bike falls...more
Kevin Girkins, one of our fantastic employees and an accomplished cyclist was kind enough to write a review of the Chrome bag he has been using for the past year. Now, I’m not saying that you’ll be as fast as Kevin, if you buy one of these. But I’m not saying you won’t be either. Chrome has recently discontinued this unique bag, and we just have a few in stock at a marked down price. If you’re interested, this may be your last opportunity.
Click here to view or purchase the bag on our online store, or keep reading for his review.
To start, the reason I purchased this bag is for a weekly criterium series we have here in Austin called “The Driveway”, and the wheels I race on are tubulars. The race is here in town and easy enough for me to ride to, so why take the car to a bicycle race that only lasts an hour and is 10 miles down the road? With this and my equipment in mind, it was time to make a...more
